How the brick calculator works
Bricks = Wall area × bricks per sq ft × (1 + waste)
Mortar = Bricks ÷ bricks per bag
A standard modular brick (about 7⅝ × 2¼ in face) laid with 3/8-inch mortar joints takes 6.75 bricks per square foot of wall face. For a double-thick (two-wythe) wall, double the area.
Mortar
Quikrete's technical data sheet says each 80 lb bag of its Mortar Mix will lay up to 37 standard bricks. Real yield drops with thicker joints and messy work, so round up and keep a spare bag.
Tips
- Buy 5% extra for cuts and breakage, 10% for patterns or lots of corners.
- Check bricks for chips at delivery and mix bricks from several pallets to blend color.
- Structural and retaining walls need footings and reinforcement per local code.
