About
CalcBeforeYouBuy exists to answer one question before you head to the store: how much do I need?
Buying too little means a second trip and, for jobs like concrete, a weaker result. Buying too much wastes money and leaves you with leftovers to store or return. Our calculators turn your measurements into the units you actually buy — bags, boxes, gallons, sheets, bundles and tons.
How we calculate
- Standard, published values. We use widely published figures such as premixed concrete bag yields, typical paint coverage, ENERGY STAR insulation levels, university seeding rates and standard sheet and board sizes — and link to the sources on the page.
- Waste included, never hidden. Every calculator shows its waste allowance and lets you change it.
- The math is on the page. Each calculator explains its formula, and each worked example shows the calculation step by step.
- Prices are yours. Cost estimates use the prices you enter. Our cost guides summarize published national ranges and say where they come from.
- Tested. The calculation engine is checked against hand-worked examples before every update.
What we are — and aren't
CalcBeforeYouBuy is an independent website. We are not affiliated with any manufacturer or store. Our results are estimates for planning and purchasing; structural work such as footings, load-bearing decks and roofs should follow local building codes and, where required, a licensed professional.
The site is free to use and may be supported by advertising. Ads never change the numbers a calculator gives you.
