How the sod calculator works
Sod to buy = Lawn area × (1 + extra)
Rolls = Sod to buy ÷ sq ft per roll
Pallets = Sod to buy ÷ sq ft per pallet
How much extra sod?
For a simple rectangular lawn, 5% covers cuts at the edges. Curvy beds, many trees or narrow strips can push waste to 10%.
Sod sizes
Sod is sold in small slabs (often 16×24 in, about 2.67 sq ft), standard rolls (2×5 ft = 10 sq ft) or big rolls for machine installation. A pallet typically holds 400–500 sq ft, depending on the farm and grass type — ask before ordering.
Installation tips
- Prepare and level the soil before delivery; sod should be laid the day it arrives.
- Stagger the joints like bricks and butt edges tightly.
- Water deeply right after installing and keep the sod moist until it roots.
