How the topsoil calculator works
Cubic yards = Area × Depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27
Bags = Cubic feet ÷ bag size (0.75 or 1 cu ft)
How deep should topsoil be?
| Project | Typical depth |
|---|---|
| New lawn from seed or sod | 4–6 in |
| Leveling low spots | ½–2 in at a time |
| Topdressing an existing lawn | ¼–½ in |
| New garden bed | 8–12 in (often mixed with compost) |
Bulk or bags?
A cubic yard is 36 bags of 0.75 cu ft. For anything over about a yard, bulk delivery is usually far cheaper per yard. Ask for screened topsoil so rocks and clods are removed.
Tips
- Soil settles; add about 10–20% for new beds that will be planted right away.
- Don't bury existing lawn under more than about an inch when leveling — the grass needs to grow through.
- A soil test (often available through your county extension office) tells you whether to add lime or nutrients.
